"Star Dancer: A Hero Among Us'.
In November, 2002, U.S. Navy Commander John Bennett Herrington-a member of the Chickasaw Nation-made history as the first Native American to board the Space Shuttle Endeavor flight STS-113. On his journey, Commander Herrington carried a flute made by Jim Gilliland, a retired engineer from the Kennedy Space Center, a decorated eagle feather with a Chickasaw Nation flag presented to him by Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby, Herrington presented the flute and eagle feather to the National Museum of the American Indian in 2004.
Presented to Commander Herrington by Phil Lane Sr, an Elder of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, the eagle feather was carried aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor and floated in the International Space Station airlock. It is one of two feathers from the same bald eagle to have flown in space and is beaded to represent the colors of the earth's people, the blue of the sky, and the green of the earth.
