Description
As seen at the ICA, the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston. Things are not always as they appear. I studied the various Murano glass objects in the wooden cabinet and didn't know what they actually were until I read the description....

Murano glass and wooden cabinet
Gift of Barbara Lee, The Barbara Lee Collection of Art by Women
Over the past three decades, London-based Mona Hatoum has appropriated such domestic fixtures as rugs, chairs, cabinets, and teacups to merge the appealing and familiar with the threatening and deadly. In 'Natura Morta' (Edwardian Vitrine), Hatoum has arranged colorful, hand-blown glass objects in a cabinet commonly used for storing and displaying china. At first glance, the objects might resemble decorative fruits-a pomegranate, a pineapple, or a lemon-but a closer look reveals them to be hand grenades. The artist imbues the fragile and beautiful with a menacing violence.
