Artist's Description

Burial urn of the K'iche Maya of Guatemala's southern highlands. Dated between AD 650 and 850.

Earthenware with post-fire paint. A large eared bat perches on this urn, whose body combines images of a jaguar with the spikes of the ceiba tree, the mythical 'world tree' that was pillar of the universe and conduit to the spiritual realm.

These urns held the remains of important people and were buried in pyramids or placed in sacred caves where descendents made offerings and sought advice from their revered ancestors. at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Wyeth who lived in Needham and donated the paintings he used for books and magazines to the Needham Public Library. They have a great collection of his artwork there now. This is where I would go to immerse myself in his artwork and the artwork of all the book illustrators. Ludwig Bemelmans became another of my favorites and so I became a watercolorist and muralist at an early age. I spent my high school years taking Saturday classes at Mass College of Art in Boston and spent quite a bit of time in the art department at Needham High School...
