Artist's Description

FAITH

This is a painting of a sacred Hopi Kachina Hilili helmet mask that was auctioned off in France against the wishes of the Hopi people because the Hopis faith is that they believe this mask is actually alive by their faith. When the masks are not used, they are stored behind muslin screens so they can breathe and are ritually fed corn pollen.

The Hopi tribal mask is revered as a sacred ritual artifact by the Native American Hopi tribe in Arizona. The masks are worn by dancers during religious ceremonies and are considered as living beings. They are considered so sacred, in fact, that in Dec. 2013 a US charity spent $530,000 to rescue 24 Hopi artifacts from an auction in Paris, in order to return them to their rightful owners. About Jean Pacheco Ravinski

Jean Pacheco Ravinski

Hello! And thank you to all the THOUSANDS of visitors to my Fine Art America online art gallery! Growing up in Needham, Massachusetts I was influenced by the paintings and illustrations of N. C. Wyeth who lived in Needham and donated the paintings he used for books and magazines to the Needham Public Library. They have a great collection of his artwork there now. This is where I would go to immerse myself in his artwork and the artwork of all the book illustrators. Ludwig Bemelmans became another of my favorites and so I became a watercolorist and muralist at an early age. I spent my high school years taking Saturday classes at Mass College of Art in Boston and spent quite a bit of time in the art department at Needham High School...
